If you've ever read and watched with rapt attention the adventures of Lyra Belacqua, an orphan raised by two scholars in a world that is both like ours and yet entirely different, then chances are you're just as eager for the long-awaited release of "The Golden Compass" next week. The movie has been hotly anticipated for years because it's not often that Hollywood commits to adapting a book for the big screen. But if you can't wait another day to get your fix, take heart because there's hope! You can find leaked footage from the movie on YouTube or even download torrents of it if so inclined. The real question is: Is it really worth watching? One of the most striking things about this movie adaptation is that it does not follow the plot of the book. In fairness, many movie adaptations do not follow their literary counterparts exactly or even at all. As a matter of fact, you'll be hard-pressed to find a lot of movies out there that do follow their sources, and your best bet would be to stick to literature if you want an accurate depiction. Director Chris Weitz has already admitted he deliberately deviated from the story by author Philip Pullman, but insisted there are some parts that are similar. "The Golden Compass" is set in a universe like our own, with the exception that it is ruled by evil magicians who believe Jesus Christ was an imposter. The movie's running time is two hours and forty-six minutes, which is surprisingly short for a film adaptation of such magnitude. Pullman's book, on the other hand, runs more than 1,000 pages long and has three distinct sections. The first part of the book introduces us to Lyra's world, with the second making up about half of its length and focusing mainly on Lyra herself as she sets out into the world with her troupe of traveling performers. It is the third section, however, which reveals the true agenda of 'The Magisterium', the corrupt organization in charge of Lyra's world. This is also when Lyra begins to embark on her quest to find her father, which in this movie it appears that all she had to do was set out into the world by herself and he'll just happen to be in the same place that she ends up in. The fact that "Golden Compass" draws inspiration from several different books instead of just one makes it an even more disjointed production because it doesn't tell a continuous story. There are bits from Pullman's book, bits from "Northern Lights", and bits from other books which the filmmakers have reshaped to make a cohesive narrative. For Lyra's part, her quest seems somewhat ambiguous since she's never really able to find an adult who was up to the task of helping her out. Lyra does set out on a journey to save her world, but it doesn't appear that anyone is going to stop the evil magician known as Lord Asriel until she does it herself. It's a classic 'girl power' movie trope that is supposed to empower young girls but only ends up pandering to their worst instincts. cfa1e77820
